The secrets of Life

From macromolecular interactions inside individual cells all the way to the behavior of entire organisms – scientists of the Graduate School of Life Sciences focus on a wide range of topics (GSLS). To fully comprehend the diverse topics encountered in the life sciences, different departments and research centers have joined their efforts. Scientists from biology, medicine, chemistry, physics and philosophy work together. The program is organized into different sections: biomedicine, infection and immunity, integrative biology, neurobiology and an MD/PhD program. PhD students benefit from strong mentoring, and a stimulating research environment. A training and mentoring program encompassing lecture courses, seminars, scientific conferences, summer schools and transferable skill courses is tailored to the individual needs of each student. Alumni and mentoring programs together with career development workshops assist the students in planning their future careers. The graduate school is built on the strengths of a large number of departments and interdepartmental research centers such as the Biocenter, the Rudolf Virchow Center, the Center for Infectious Diseases, the Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research, and many international research partners.
