Research on Africa with Africa
On this Graduate School
BIGSAS – that’s short for the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies. More than 60 junior fellows work here in close collaboration with both post-doctoral candidates and senior fellows on projects for their doctoral degrees. Most of them come from approximately 20 different African nations. The school’s credo is “Research on Africa with Africa”. Collaborative projects with renowned universities and research institutions in Africa and Europe have created a tightly knit international network. Five African universities in Morocco, Kenya, Benin, Mozambique and South Africa are linked to BIGSAS as institutional partners. Together with BIGSAS they foster outstanding scientific and academic talent which will act as a competent and creative catalyst for new developments in science and society. Each dissertation focuses on one of the following areas of research:
- Uncertainty, Innovation and the Quest for Order in Africa
- Culture, Concepts and Communication in Africa. Approaches through Language, Literature and Media
- Concepts and Conflicts in Development Cooperation with Africa
- Coping with Environmental Criticality and Disasters in Africa
