In order to take over leadership later on in their professional career young scientists need excellent education and intensive support. In Heidelberg renowned scientists of the Ruprecht-Karls University and research centres like the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, the Max-Planck-Institut for Medical Research und the German Cancer Research Center aligned their efforts. This alignment resulted in the foundation of the "The Hartmut Hoffmann-Berling International Graduate School of Molecular and Cellular Biology", abbreviated HBIGS. The aim of the graduate school is to better structure and improve the PhD education by providing additional interdisciplinary services regarding teaching, individual mentoring and professional career development. The research activities of the PhD students concentrate on the following four science disciplines: basic mechanisms of the molecular biology, cellular differentiation, pathogen biology and molecular biotechnology. By means of international advertisements and a competitive selection procedure, only the best register at HBIGS – and profit from an excellent education there. Numerous Meet- and Greet- arrangements with university and other research facilities as well as potential employers enable the PhD students to establish networks. The career service of HBIGS advises the PhD students early by her individual career planning, promotes the compatibility of family and occupation and obtain the acquisition of additional competence.
