Windows for Research

The main cornerstones of Freiburg’s institutional strategy „Windows for Research“ are the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS), the postdoctoral research group program, and the International Graduate Academy (IGA). The FRIAS is the international research institute of the Albert-Ludwig University of Freiburg. It unites the humanities, the natural sciences, and engineering in its four sections: the School of History, the School of Language & Literature, the School of Life Sciences-LIFENET, and the School of Soft Matter Research. The FRIAS gives scholars the freedom they need to conduct excellent research, strengthens the worldwide networks of Freiburg’s researchers, and increases the international visibility of their work. It promotes early stage researchers and serves as a forum for innovative interdisciplinary projects. The International Graduate Academy is responsible for providing early stage researchers with qualifications geared toward the academic cultures of their disciplines as well as for offering a wide range of resources, including special advising services and a transdisciplinary qualification program. The main goals of the IGA include qualifying doctoral students for careers at and outside of the university and increasing the proportion of female and international PhD students.
