On this Graduate School
The Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS) is a joint venture between the state funded University of Bremen and the private Jacobs University. The advantages of this cooperation are obvious: “We have integrated two areas of excellence and created an international faculty,” says Professor Steffen Mau, Dean of the Graduate School. The regional network between the research institutes in Bremen is also important to him.
The BIGSSS fellows benefit especially from this cooperation. Sebastian Büttner is writing his dissertation at BIGSSS and is planning to work there as a postdoc. During his Ph.D. studies he was able to make many contacts through this network, and with a doctoral degree from BIGSSS, he is sure to have good chances on the job market.
For the first five years the graduate school has placed its Ph.D. program under the umbrella theme “The future of social and political integration”. Altogether there are five thematic fields, to which interested doctoral students can apply with their individual projects
