Most students dream of going to college so that they can better themselves and improve their chances of career opportunities and gainful employment.  Many also hope that they can get some scholarship money to help them pay the tab.

Although higher education is no longer limited to the privileged and wealthy elite, it is still too expensive for many young adults.  For this reason, most rely on help from their parents, federal financial aid (i.e. student loans), and grants and scholarships.

Before you start seeking and applying for scholarships, however, there are a few common myths you should probably debunk so that you don’t go in with the wrong idea.

  1. Scholarships Negate Student Aid

This is not necessarily true.  Receiving scholarship funds to help you pay for your education will not disqualify you from receiving financial aid.

In some cases, being awarded scholarships could reduce the amount of student aid you’re eligible for, however, so you should make sure you understand the rules.  Just keep in mind that scholarships are preferable to student aid because you won’t have to pay them back after graduation.

  1. Age is a Qualification Factor

This is absolutely untrue.  There is a common myth that only high school seniors and young college students can apply for scholarships.  You may therefore think you’re too old or too young to apply.

This is not the case.  High school students as young as about 13 can start applying for scholarships, which they will receive when they start college if scholarship funds are awarded.  In addition, you’re never too old to apply for scholarships.

If you start college later in life or you return to school after an extended absence, there’s nothing to stop you from applying for scholarships.  Your age will not be a factor in determining awards.

  1. You Have to Have a Special Talent or Skill

It’s true that gifted athletes and intellectuals are eligible for certain scholarships due to the things that make them stand out from their peers.  However, there are also scholarship opportunities for students that may not be at the top of any given field or hobby.

For example, there are scholarships for first-generation Americans.  So if your parents emigrated to the U.S. you could qualify.  There are also scholarships for redheads, twins, and vegans, just for example.

There are scholarships offered by major and even by interests.  If you like to write mysteries, create greeting cards, or master duck calls, you might be surprised to learn that there are scholarship opportunities that cater to your interests and talents.

The point is that you never know what you might find when you start looking for scholarships, so it pays to seek out opportunities that may apply to you.

  1. Scholarships Will Come to Me

Even if you’re good at sports, you’re the president of the student council, or you’re the valedictorian, you still need to apply for scholarships.  There are a rare few who are offered scholarships when they apply at Harvard, UCLA, or PSU online, but you cannot rely on this outcome.

  1. Getting a Scholarship is Like Winning the Lottery

Many students apply for scholarships, it’s true.  It pays to keep in mind, however, that some scholarships are more popular than others and therefore incite greater competition.

There are also plenty of scholarships that go unclaimed each year because students don’t find or apply for them.  Some have strict criteria that limit the number of students eligible to apply, but you definitely won’t get the scholarships you never apply for.

Were you embarrassed by the flip phone you carried around last semester? Struggled with a cheap laptop that always seemed to lose power at the most inopportune times? Well, this year is going to be different.

As you head back to college this year, there are a few things you can do to stay up-to-date with the latest tech trends without breaking the bank. With a few simple tweaks in your lifestyle and a few more resources at your fingertips, college, at least technology-wise, will be a breeze.

  1. Take Advantage of Student Discounts

Apple, Microsoft, Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and more all offer major discounts to students. Apple offers a brilliant student package while Amazon lets students use Amazon Prime for free! Take advantage of these discounts to score deals on the best software technology and gadgets including laptops, tablets, phones, external hard drives, and more.

There will never be a time when so many tech discounts are offered to you (except maybe in the military), so use them while you can!

  1. Compile a List of Tech Resources for Your Gadgets

At some point or another, one or more of your tech gadgets is going to have a breakdown. There will be viruses, flickering screens or complete shutdowns all together that could greatly hinder your ability to succeed in class. Take the time, before school starts, to compile a list of technical resources, such as websites or hotlines, that can help with your device-specific questions and concerns.

While Google is a great overall search engine, knowing exactly which websites will offer the most help will save a lot of time and frustration when you are on a deadline.

  1. Rent or Buy Digital Textbooks

With the practically infinite amount of resources online, it is highly likely that you will find the textbook you need online or in a digital format. Many companies including Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble offer textbook rental programs. Also, don’t forget about the trusty public library e-books section!

Once you’ve tracked down the book, use apps such as iBooks, Kindle, or Google Play Books to access the book and download it directly to your tablet, phone, or computer.

  1. Purchase an External Hard Drive

Everyone is jumping on the cloud bandwagon, and while the overall concept is great, it never hurts to have a physical backup of absolutely everything just in case. We recommend buying a 1 or 2 terabyte drive as this will get you the most bang for your buck. But if you prefer the more economical route in terms of space, having a numerous amount of USB drives is helpful too.

  1. Search for Free Software

Microsoft Office and the Adobe Suite is extremely expensive software, especially on a tight college budget. Before you jump back into the lecture hall, shop around for free alternative software that still gets the job done without having to spend next week’s food budget.

A great place to start the search is by inputting “open source” in a search engine. This will give you access to companies that offer their software for free and for the greater benefit of giving everyone the ability to accomplish tasks on a budget.

So whether you are attending school on campus or participating in online, be smart about what technology you decide to use this year.

If you look into the world of recreational and stimulating beverages, the first one that is going to pop it’s head up is definitely Kratom. In fact, the herb has become so famous globally that talks are going on about replacing the traditional beverages like tea and coffee with Kratom. Opioid overdose and addiction is a situation that has plagued the world.

Kratom helps to deal with this problem as well. In fact, the utility of Kratom is many, which makes it an important consumed herb. However, what should be your approach with respect to Kratom on campus is a different deal altogether. This article is a small attempt to answer that question.

Why take Kratom?

It is a powdered form of a drug that is derived from the Mitrogyna Speciosa plant, which is indigenous to South-East Asia. It is mainly dispensed in the form of powder or paste and is consumed as a beverage generally. The popularity of Kratom can be judged from the fact that more than 5 million people use it in the US alone.

It is mainly cultivated in Borneo, Bali, Indonesia, and other similar geographical locations. It is primarily of three types based on the color of the vein running along the center of the leaves. This includes the red, white, and green form. Although each type specializes in a specific type of function, the overall utility of Kratom is as follows-

  • People suffering from long-lasting, excruciating, chronic pain due to systemic conditions can benefit from it as Kratom has the pain-relieving property inherently.
  • Some people are advocating it to be a good replacement for opioid narcotics for dealing with pain. This is because patients become addicted to opioids after long time use, and the side effects of it are quite detrimental.
  • In case you feel that you start feeling lethargic quite frequently and lack energy as a whole, Kratom can be the answer and provide you with all the fuel that you need for your body.
  • It has positive influences on your mind as well. Kratom such as kratom crazy red vein thai helps you concentrate better. This automatically leads to an increase in productivity, which is translated into more success in professional and sometimes personal life.
  • People suffering from various mental disorders like depression, panic, and anxiety can benefit from taking Kratom.
  • When taken in controlled amounts, it can also have recreational properties like euphoria. However, you need to acclimate your body to be tolerable for higher doses.

The problems with Kratom

Despite the multiple utilities and benefits of Kratom that have been mentioned above, it has not found any preference or acceptability with the Food and Drug Administration yet. The FDA has not found any credible study that establishes Kratom as a potential opioid replacement. As the abuse of opioids is already well-known, allowing another drug of similar potential seems to be a risky potential.

Moreover, there have been reports of salmonella infection due to the intake of Kratom, which has not worked on its favor. Overall, due to the reasons mentioned above, Kratom has not been included in the list of approved drugs yet. They state that there is no compact proof of its credibility, and they cannot base anything on the grounds of positive feedback.

What should you do regarding Kratom on campus?

Now that it has become clear that Kratom is not totally legal in different parts of the world, you need to be careful when using it. The benefits of Kratom are something that you can definitely not deny. There are scores of people that have used it and come out with positive results. However, due to the stand taken by the FDA, it cannot be consumed on campus without raising any eyebrows whatsoever. So, you have to be very careful in your endeavors.

To conclude, there is still a lot of scope for research in Kratom. Once it becomes legal, using it freely won’t be a problem at all. Till then, use Kratom judiciously and only as much as needed.
