On this Graduate School
The Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) is a joint graduate school of the Berlin universities: Freie Universität, Humboldt-Universität and Technische Universität. The BMS is one of the latest additions to Berlin’s scientific landscape. Founded in June 2006, the BMS was awarded the status as one of the graduate schools in the first round of the “Initiative for Excellence” in October 2006. The innovative concept of the BMS program is combined with a teaching schedule tailored directly to the needs of the students. Konrad Polthier (FU Berlin) was elected chairman on 1 July 2010. Together with his co-chairs, Jürg Kramer (HU Berlin) and Günter M. Ziegler (TU Berlin), they govern the BMS. The BMS offers a structured, two phase program leading to a Ph.D. It combines the strengths of the German doctoral education with the advantages of successful US graduate schools, thus producing first-class mathematicians in both pure and applied mathematics who can make lasting contributions in academia as well as economy and industry.
